How to write a Japanese address in English

Write from the smallest unit to the largest, the reverse of Japanese order:

Example: 1-1 Chiyoda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0001, Japan (Japanese: 〒100-0001 東京都千代田区千代田1-1). For overseas shopping sites, put the town and block number (e.g. "3-5-12 Odorinishi") in address line 1, the ward/city in "City", the prefecture in "State/Province" and the 7-digit code in "ZIP". Japan Post delivers mail whose postal code and block number are correct even if the romanization differs slightly. Writing the last line "JAPAN" in capitals is recommended for international mail.

What is the format of a Japanese postal code?

Seven digits written as 3 digits, a hyphen and 4 digits (e.g. 100-0001), often preceded by the postal mark 〒. The first three digits roughly identify the area.

What does "any other address in this municipality" mean?

Japan Post assigns a general code (usually ending in 0000) for addresses in the municipality that are not listed under a specific town. It does not identify a specific town.

Why are some towns listed with several postal codes?

Large towns can be split by chome (block) numbers, and tall office buildings have a separate code for each floor. Check the Japanese range shown under the town name.
